Eureka!

I've got a simple single solution that the government could use to solve at least three big problems facing our country:
  • Allow petroleum refineries to be built on the sites of the military bases closed by the BRAC commission.
  • Relocate all hurricane refugees to the abandoned housing around these bases, and give them jobs at the new refineries (or in other support businesses).
The cost of these tasks should easily offset by:
  • lower long-term energy costs,
  • not having to pay for massive infrastructure repairs in the parts of our country adjacent to the ocean and below sea level, and
  • not having to subsidize anyone living in those ultimately untenable locations.
Seems logical to me...

(I found this related set of posts just after I wrote this)

update 1: looks like several other people are discussing these topics...

update 2: porkopolis asks the question (in comments here), "How many of the displaced actually have the skill set needed to work in a refinery?"

You're right, it's not an complete solution. They wouldn't all have the exact skills, but there's likely a higher proportion of those workers with some experience in the petroleum business than in many other places. Plus, a large enough proportion of displaced workers would have related skills - such as general construction, repair, plumbing, even truck driving - that reeducation should not be too difficult.

Actually I was thinking of it as a more permanent solution - as an alternative to throwing money into the ocean (so to speak). There are many other considerations for the short term, which the president and his advisors likely have a better grasp of than any individual. Besides, most of the military bases haven't been emptied yet, and it would take even longer to build the refineries (or other industries) on the sites.

I would think refineries need to be on rivers. Many bases may not work.

It is a good idea.

Better idea: Why don't idiots like you go work at the refineries. I didn't realize we were running a Stalinist state here, complete with forced collectivization--or did you vote for Bush?

Better Idea: Why don't idiots like Rob notice that nowhere in my SUGGESTION did i say we FORCE anyone to work at the refineries, or use proper punctuation at the end of a question? I didn't realize we were running a welfare state here, complete with incessant whining--or did you vote for clinton?

And stop insulting apes by using that pic.
