It’s not so much that conservatives or their libertarian-leaning cohorts like myself like Bush; we tolerate him, not because the Left hates him but because the alternative is so very much worse. We also are aware that, whether even Bush acts like it or not, the nation is currently engaged in the most crucial struggle of our lifetimes, and we feel ourselves duty-bound to give the nation’s leadership our support (or at least the benefit of the doubt, anyway) because of it. This sense of duty does not encompass slavish obedience to every ill-considered big-government whim Bush may seek to inflict on us. But it also does not allow for the kind of mindless, rabid opposition to his every last proposal that has become the stock in trade of the Democrats, who seem positively eager to reduce themselves to lowly bedpan-cleaners in an asylum run by its BDS-afflicted inmates.(emphases mine)
