A nation that expects the government to prevent churches from burning, to control the price of bread or gasoline, to secure every job, and to find some villain for every dramatic accident, risks an even larger loss of life and liberty.
Eight years and 54 days (approximately). At that point, had we kept the flag at half-mast one day per victim (not counting the murderers -- I've never been able to figure out why some people insist on heaping the murderers together with the murdered in these tragedies), on November 4 of *this year* we would be able to restore the national flags to full-mast.
I wish we'd done that as a nation, instead of just in my heart.
