Isaiah 9:2-7
The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
You shall multiply the nation,
You shall increase their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness of harvest,
As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.
For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called
Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Eternal Father,
Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

Thanks Giving
Psalm 107 (NASB)
-------+++++++-------
O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.
---+++---
-------+++++++-------
O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.
---+++---
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region;
They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
They were hungry and thirsty;
Their soul fainted within them.
They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
They were hungry and thirsty;
Their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them also by a straight way,
To go to an inhabited city.
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them also by a straight way,
To go to an inhabited city.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Prisoners in misery and chains,
Because they had rebelled against the words of God
And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
Therefore He humbled their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was none to help.
Prisoners in misery and chains,
Because they had rebelled against the words of God
And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
Therefore He humbled their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was none to help.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And broke their bands apart.
He saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And broke their bands apart.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has shattered gates of bronze
And cut bars of iron asunder.
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has shattered gates of bronze
And cut bars of iron asunder.

Fools, because of their rebellious way,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
Their soul abhorred all kinds of food,
And they drew near to the gates of death.
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
Their soul abhorred all kinds of food,
And they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.
He saved them out of their distresses.
He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And tell of His works with joyful singing.
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And tell of His works with joyful singing.

Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;
They have seen the works of the LORD,
And His wonders in the deep.
For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind,
Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul melted away in their misery.
They reeled and staggered like a drunken man,
And were at their wits' end.
Who do business on great waters;
They have seen the works of the LORD,
And His wonders in the deep.
For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind,
Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul melted away in their misery.
They reeled and staggered like a drunken man,
And were at their wits' end.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
He caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired haven.
And He brought them out of their distresses.
He caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people,
And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people,
And praise Him at the seat of the elders.

He changes rivers into a wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
A fruitful land into a salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
A fruitful land into a salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
He changes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
And there He makes the hungry to dwell,
So that they may establish an inhabited city,
And sow fields and plant vineyards,
And gather a fruitful harvest.
Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly,
And He does not let their cattle decrease.
And a dry land into springs of water;
And there He makes the hungry to dwell,
So that they may establish an inhabited city,
And sow fields and plant vineyards,
And gather a fruitful harvest.
Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly,
And He does not let their cattle decrease.
When they are diminished and bowed down
Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
He pours contempt upon princes
And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
He pours contempt upon princes
And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction,
And makes his families like a flock.
The upright see it and are glad;
But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
And makes his families like a flock.
The upright see it and are glad;
But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.

Who is wise?
Let him give heed to these things,
And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD.

the cognitive dissonance was deafening
at work after the election, one person told us about having voted straight-ticket democrat and being sad that none of them won.
at work tonight, the same person was railing against political machines.
i'm guessing they've never been to chicago.

Ebola panic in New York
Here are some reasons that New Yorkers are upset about Ebola reaching their city:
1) The virus is not gluten-free.
2) It is not locally-grown.
3) It leaves a large carbon footprint as it flies across the ocean.
4) Ebola won't fit in a 16oz. cup.
5) Its name mocks the name of their tri-syllabic Saint Obama (PBUH).
6) It is unsustainable.
7) Opposition to any lifeform from Africa appears racist.
8) The virus is waging a war on womyn.
9) Its symptoms include reddening.
10) It shows that there are some undocumented immigrants New Yorkers are opposed to after all.
Can you think of any others?

So, in just one day we had approximately 17 times as much coverage of a political traffic jam in New Jersey, as we did of Obama's use of the IRS as a political weapon for six long months. No, seriously.see also...
Well, i was going to just note a few of the under-reported missteps, misdeeds, misdemeanors, felonies, and treasons that obama has inflicted on America, then i found some much-more-thorough sources (primarily InvestmentWatch). Brace yourself:

dumb clucks
lileks on chickens and their friends. it's all balanced perfectly between humor and insight, and point #1 is the most important:
Yelling at strangers that their egg-salad sandwich is the moral equivalent of supporting Third World underage sex slavery might not be as persuasive as you think. What’s more, if egg consumption is the equivalent of infanticide, people might wonder why you just sorta leaped over the whole actual infanticide part of modern society and went straight to weeping conspicuously over unborn birds.

"We will bury you"
Kruschev just forgot to mention that the USSR would do it posthumously:
update: then read this somewhat-related piece
"...ideological and memetic warfare has been a favored tactic for... America’s (major recent) adversaries — Nazis, Communists, and Islamists. All three put substantial effort into cultivating American proxies to influence U.S. domestic policy and foreign policy in favorable directions... like the (Nazi) “German-American Bund”... Today, the Islamists are having some success at manipulating our politics through... organizations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations.read it all
But it was the Soviet Union, in its day, that was the master of this game. They made dezinformatsiya (disinformation) a central weapon of their war against... the U.S. They conducted memetic subversion against the U.S. on many levels at a scale that is only now becoming clear as historians burrow through their archives and ex-KGB officers sell their memoirs.
The Soviets had an entire “active measures” department devoted to churning out anti-American dezinformatsiya... (and) their memes seeped into Western popular culture and are repeated endlessly in (for example) the products of Hollywood.
Indeed, the index of Soviet success is that most of us no longer think of these memes as Communist propaganda. It takes a significant amount of digging and rethinking and remembering... to realize that there was a time... when all of these ideas would have seemed alien, absurd, and repulsive to most people — at best, the beliefs of a nutty left-wing fringe, and at worst instruments of deliberate subversion intended to destroy the American way of life.
Koch shows us that the worst-case scenario was, as it turns out now, the correct one; these ideas (were) deliberately designed to destroy the American way of life. Another index of their success is that most members of the bicoastal elite can no longer speak of “the American way of life” without deprecation (or) irony... In this and other ways, the corrosive effects of Stalin’s meme war have come to utterly pervade our culture.
The most paranoid and xenophobic conservatives of the Cold War were... the closest to the truth in estimating the magnitude and subtlety of Soviet subversion. (Though anticommunists) dismissed half of the Right’s complaint as crude blather. We were wrong; the Rosenbergs and Alger Hiss really were guilty, the Hollywood Ten really were Stalinist tools, and all of Joseph McCarthy’s rants about “Communists in the State Department” were essentially true. The Venona transcripts and other new material leave no room for reasonable doubt on this score.
While the espionage apparatus of the Soviet Union didn’t outlast it, their memetic weapons did. These memes are now coming near to crippling our culture’s response to Islamic terrorism."

...the original story seemed “fishy” in the sense that a trawler coming back to the docks after a week of dragging the ocean with enormous nets is “fishy.”
...when you enter the parallel world of Twitter, where people who cannot spell and have the sense of history that makes a fish’s experience look like the recollections of Methuselah, you know that it’s not an inherently wise medium.

Rules for feminists
Collected and adapted from the article and comments here:
- We are just as strong as men, yet we need men to escort us or avoid us when we’re alone because all men are potential rapists.
- Since we are just as smart as men, we need affirmative action programs in order to show it.
- We are just as capable as men, yet we need feminist men to defend us and speak on our behalves.
- We stand in solidarity with all women, yet we’re willing to defame and destroy those women who are successful without us or who dare to disagree with us. (In fact, when possible, we prefer getting the feminist men to do it.)
- Since we have the same interests as men, we're not interested in typically male pastimes - it’s the men’s fault for being such misogynists.
- We are just as powerful as men, yet we are perpetual victims. If a woman is not aware of her perpetual victimhood, we will shame her into admitting it, since ours is the only way to think.
- We decry sexism, but value paternalism.
- We advocate for equality and social justice, as long as everyone realizes that we are more important than anyone else.
- We are fully-actualized, independent human beings who refuse to take responsibility for our own actions.
- We believe all women should be able to choose for themselves what they wish to do in life, unless they choose something considered "woman's work".
- Gender stereotypes are false, but all men are filthy rapey beasts to be shunned.
- We will fight for gay rights, while using homosexual slurs in arguments against men.
- We complain about lack of women in male-dominated fields, but are hypersensitive and intolerant of "male culture".
- Because we are strong, we require movies and books to provide us with strong female characters.
- We can engage in joking about sex or touching a man, then cry harassment when a man does the same.
- We want freedom and happiness, but instill fear and anxiety on people (such as "rape culture").
- We vouch for diversity, but treat non-white and foreign women with arrogance, "educating" them and deciding for them what they should want.
- We want men to offer us career opportunities and promotions, recognize our potential and achievements, without approaching us, talking to us, hiring us, including us into their circles - because we might accuse them of harassment for any excuse.
- We are diverse women of many rich diverse backgrounds who all must unflinchingly favor Democratic policies.

Hollywood: a class act
(massive profanity warning)
Every time they say "think of the children", hear this.
Every time the kids watch cartoons, hear this.
Every time they play a "classic episode" from the good old days, hear this.
Every time they say "fair and balanced", hear this.
Every time they advertise "fun for the whole family", hear this.
p.s. Every time you see anyone flashing gang signs, hear this.
(Thank April Winchell for the collection of really horrid recordings)

(i woulda posted sooner but i was out of town)
What does the Fox say?
What does the Fox say?
Aretha Franklin may spell out the word “Respect” several times throughout her synonymous song, but that doesn’t mean Harvard-educated President Obama knows how to spell it.In a subsequent White House press release, President Obama blamed the gaffe on Dan Quayle for stealing that "e" to spell "potatoe".
During a speech at the White House’s Women of Soul concert series, Obama missed a letter when spelling the word out loud, Entertainment Weekly notes.
Obama said: “When Aretha [Franklin] first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her, she had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans, and women, and then everyone who felt marginalized because of what they looked like or who they loved. They wanted some respect.”

the right to privacy
All of these spying scandals could be cleared up quickly if it was pointed out how they all violated Roe v Wade.
...or maybe NSA's nosiness can get Roe v Wade overturned. Either way it's a win.
update: welcome imao readers, particularly oppo who commented there:

The NSA’s spying has only two outcomes: Woe vs. Raid.

maybe there is something to this
i think that most of the food scares in the past 30 years (at least) have been blown waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of proportion, including the beef hormone issue.
but the other night i saw a ten-year-old girl with a mustache and unibrow...
and frida kahlo didn't have any kids...

star trek vs dune
no, not that "dune"
(from a comment at lileks' bleat)
nasa produced some neat images of sand dunes on mars, which were popularized and satirized on gizmodo.
then, lileks' commenter belaglik boldly went where no photoshopper had gone before!

reruns
valentine's
day
ideas,
again
update 1: the local malcontent commented that he thinks i'm "better than that", which is nice to hear. though i may be completely misunderstanding that thought (l.m. correct me if i am and i'll re-update), but i don't know that there's any basis for it in reality.
this year will be the 26th anniversary of the only valentine's day i ever had an actual valentine. and while i think i rank slightly above average on the romantic ideal spectrum, i barely had the social tools necessary to participate in that one, and it's been downhill on that front ever since.
so, i will give my kudos to all good romantic celebrations this week - from the sideline, as usual.
update 2: this potato seems to agree with that previous post :)

it was the best of reviews, it was the worst of reviews
nro via dustbury:
The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live.and it just gets better/worse from there - read it all
It’s the most nauseating display in American public life — and I write that as someone who has just returned from a pornographers’ convention.

indirector's cut
imagine if you will...
while filming the the party scene in the movie "say anything", where lili taylor's character sings "that'll never be me", cameron crowe had decided to change that song to sound more like siouxsie and the banshees.
got it?
i imagine it would have sounded something like this ;)

mystery meet
"Maybe some day an honest journalist or writer will give us the complete story about Barack Hussein Obama and his (charitably) improbable rise to political power — but he or she will have to weather not only all the roadblocks the Obama team has thrown up to those pursuing the president’s full background... but also the ire of the Axelrod generation of journalists who... aren’t about to stand by quietly while any debunking... takes place."
